This weeks KR Selects saw Appian_007 grabbing the spotlight. Here’s what they had to say…

This various artists four tracker is a bustling, forward thinking collection of house music, lathered in emotion and shrouded in heavy textures.

Jock Burton opens up proceedings with ‘Dolmen’. Swirling synths shift temporally into place whilst embedding themselves in some buff machine beats. A slow shuffling percussion section is pierced by a flurry of snares and rim shots; keeping the listener second guessing whilst simultaneously driving the tune forward. This is a loungey, blazing syn-house exploration.

Things take a slightly more sinister turn on the A2; the ‘Slowburn’ remix of the aforementioned track combines rattling, flea market percussion with an increasingly tense, melodic substratum. Red lining kick drums shudder the bass bins whilst blistering claps and hats shatter teeth. An unexpectedly heavy weight excursion into the night.

RDMA takes us to the depths of the ocean with ‘Syeeda’. Once you’ve reared your head above the throbbing low end and smothered, melancholic pad work you are greeted by a field of glitched out fragments transmitting from once loved machines and a barrage of over driven ride cymbals. The intangible key motifs also occasionally surface; providing further context in this foggy journey.

Route 8 takes the reigns for the final track, bringing us out of the depths and fully into the light. A wondering pad section meanders; filling up dead space, whilst a completely infectious step sequenced groove kicks out against the grain. Further down the line a gripping bass lick helps to solidify this lofty track. A perfect way to close out the release, with your head nodding, drifting off into space.

Our good friend at Appian, Eduardo de la Calle, put together a documentary last year which was filmed with practically no budget, minimal technical resources but a fervent desire to document an important piece of music history, ‘Beatz’ is the result of three years of effort and the absolute dedication of Eduardo, with help of Vincent Livolsi, Daniel Arasanz and Iban Ugalde. The film is shot in various cities including Berlin, Tokyo, Barcelona, New York, Amsterdam and Paris and functions as rapid subjective summary of today’s dance music scene, from its origins to the professionalization of the genre and the paradigm shift that has come with the digital age. Pedro Pantaleon and Eduardo De La Calle ran the musical selection and the script was written by Daniel Arasanz.

For our next outing in the Appian Mix Series we present RDMA who will feature on our upcoming release Indelible Expressions Part I [APPIAN007]. Although RDMA hasn’t had too many releases to date his music is incredibly intricate and intelligently composed. It was quite difficult to single out his track Syeeda for Appian007 because his production skills are so that he can make quite a diverse range of tracks. Trying to pigeonhole him simply doesn’t do him justice.

This mix is a lovely intense, layered, dubby-at-times, trippy-at-times spread for you to enjoy anytime you like.

Feedback and comments welcomed.

Enjoy!

For our third mix we present the excellent duo of Phil Long & Dave Hargadon aka Slowburn. Hailing from Dublin these guys are very much a cornerstone of our label. They have featured on two of our releases so far with more quality music on the way in 2014. We aren’t alone in our appreciation of these guys please check out their other releases on excellent Irish Labels Lunar Disko and Apartment Records.

This perfectly selected mix of tracks demonstrates that they are not only talented producers but very accomplished DJs too!

Enjoy it, let it wash over you and get lost……
